This song began with those three words, which just struck me as I was taking in the flag after Memorial Day. After a few repetitions, a second line evolved and then I had a chorus.

I tried to keep the verses as stark and simple as possible, only using the first verse to pinpoint the story in time. Otherwise, the song could apply to just about any war.
